Skydio is the leading US drone company and the world leader in autonomous flight, the key technology for the future of drones and aerial mobility. The Skydio team combines deep expertise in artificial intelligence, best-in-class hardware and software product development, operational excellence, and customer obsession to empower a broader, more diverse audience of drone users, from utility inspectors to first responders, soldiers in battlefield scenarios, and beyond.

About the role:
With best-in-class autonomy and real-time cloud connectivity, drones are becoming critical infrastructure for solving real-world problems faster, safer, and more efficiently. Our customers, from public safety agencies to industrial and enterprise operators, rely on Skydio Cloud to plan missions, manage fleets, and make sense of the data their drones collect.
As a Software Engineering Intern, you’ll help build the systems and features that power autonomous drone operations at scale. You’ll work across the stack, from backend services in Python and Go to frontend experiences in TypeScript and React, and you’ll own meaningful pieces of work from idea to shipped feature. Our team works on a wide range of challenges and we go where we’re needed:

  • Building customer-facing features in the Skydio Cloud web app, such as fleet health monitoring, media asset management, and device management

  • Designing and extending the APIs and data models that connect drones, docks, and the data they produce

  • Visualizing rich spatial data through maps and 3D views

  • Improving the reliability, performance, and observability of the systems behind it all

The variety of work means there are plenty of opportunities to learn and have a meaningful impact on how Skydio builds and delivers software. The ideal candidate is a junior, senior, or master’s student with hands-on experience developing complex web applications, but above all, we’re looking for a highly curious and resourceful candidate, capable of using tools and AI at their disposal to accelerate their understanding and productivity.
Project Examples:

  • Building a system that allows product teams to manage feature flags and roll out functionality to customers, including both the backend service and the admin interface.

  • Developing a new view in the web app that surfaces real-time fleet status and health for customers operating many drones and docks.

  • Building tools for browsing, filtering, and managing photo and video assets captured by drones.

  • Developing a test framework that allows developers to simulate vehicle states and test how the application behaves end to end.

  • Profiling backend and frontend performance and optimizing how data is loaded and displayed to users.

What makes you a good fit:

  • Solid computer science fundamentals.

  • Meaningful project and/or internship experience building complex web applications, ideally touching both frontend and backend.

  • Proficiency with Python, Golang, and/or JavaScript/TypeScript.

  • Experience with a modern frontend framework such as React.

  • Familiarity with RESTful or GraphQL APIs and relational databases (e.g. PostgreSQL, MySQL).

  • Enjoys taking a feature from concept through design, implementation, testing, and deployment.

Bonus points for:

  • Experience with cloud services (e.g. AWS, GCP, Azure) or containerized deployments (e.g. Docker, Kubernetes).

  • Experience with geospatial data, mapping, or visualization tools such as Mapbox, Cesium, PostGIS, or ThreeJS.

  • Experience integrating frontend applications with real-time data systems.

Compensation Range: The hourly rate for this position is $47/hr for Undergrad, $53/hr for Graduate students, and $58 for PhD students*. Compensation will vary based on factors, including skill level, proficiencies, transferable knowledge, and experience.

*For some positions the pay may be dependent upon the individual's regional location.
